Recently, I supported a male client in his 40s who came to my clinic with severe right foot tendinitis and significant ankle swelling. He was in considerable pain and had difficulty walking independently, needing crutches to attend his appointment.

This case was a good example of how a holistic and integrated approach using acupuncture, electroacupuncture (EA), Chinese herbal medicine, and aromatherapy can help support pain relief, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility naturally.

Initial Presentation

The client presented with:

  • Severe right foot and ankle pain

  • Significant swelling around the ankle

  • Difficulty weight-bearing

  • Reduced mobility

  • Tendon inflammation affecting walking ability

  • Reliance on crutches due to pain

The swelling and pain had started to affect his daily activities and mobility significantly.

Holistic Treatment Approach

After assessment, I tailored a treatment plan focusing on:

Acupuncture for Tendinitis & Pain Relief

Acupuncture was used to help:

  • Reduce pain

  • Improve local circulation

  • Support tissue healing

  • Reduce muscular tension around the affected area

  • Encourage the body’s natural anti-inflammatory response

Both local and distal acupuncture points were selected based on the presentation and overall body condition.

Electroacupuncture (EA)

Electroacupuncture was added to enhance stimulation and support pain management.

EA can be particularly useful for:

  • Tendon injuries

  • Musculoskeletal pain

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Stiffness and reduced mobility

Gentle electrical stimulation was applied between acupuncture needles to help encourage circulation and neuromuscular relaxation.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

A tailored herbal formula was used to support:

  • Reduction of inflammation

  • Improved circulation

  • Relief of pain and stagnation

  • Tissue recovery

  • Reduction of swelling

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), tendonitis and swelling are often associated with obstruction of Qi and Blood flow, sometimes combined with Damp accumulation and local stagnation.

Herbal medicine was selected according to the client’s overall presentation and constitution.

Aromatherapy Support

Therapeutic essential oils were also incorporated to support:

  • Relaxation

  • Circulation

  • Comfort

  • Local muscular relief

This complemented the acupuncture treatment and enhanced overall wellbeing during recovery.

Progress After Treatment

After 2 Treatments Within One Week

The client experienced:

  • Significant reduction in ankle swelling

  • Noticeable pain relief

  • Improved ability to walk

  • Better mobility and comfort

At the 3rd Treatment

By the third session:

  • He no longer required crutches

  • He was able to walk independently

  • Pain and swelling had improved significantly

Seeing patients regain confidence in movement and daily function is always rewarding.
